ur doctors have done research, published articles on small animal and equine ocular conditions, and have lectured to veterinarians both locally, nationally and internationally. Together they have a combined total of over 25 years of experience.

Dr. Steele is a 1991 graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College, in Ontario, Canada. She completed a rotating internship at Kansas State University and residency in ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine, obtaining specialty board certification during her last year. During her residency, she completed research on retinal disease in dogs. Dr. Steele spent one year working at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, in Boston, Mass., before returning to California where she has practiced specialty referral ophthalmology in Southern California for more than a decade. Her interests include retinal disorders, corneal disease and surgery, and ocular manifestations of systemic disease. She is skilled in all facets of ophthalmic surgery, including cataract and other intraocular procedures. Dr. Steele also has a large number of equine patients. She believes in providing the finest patient care for her clients and achieves this using a team approach involving the owner, referring veterinarian and specialist.

Dr. Steele was born in Montreal, Canada, and grew up in Toronto. She is an avid cat fancier, and shares her house with several felines and a rescue dog.


Dr. Vestre was born, raised and educated in Saskatchewan, Canada, receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. Upon graduation he moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois where he completed a small animal rotating internship and an ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois. He also received a Master of Science degree while at the University of Illinois.

Following his residency Dr. Vestre became Board Certified in Veterinary Ophthalmology and joined the faculty of the School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana. He then established a private referral practice in veterinary ophthalmology in Indianapolis. Dr. Vestre’s special interests in ophthalmology include inherited ocular disease, ocular neoplasia, and extraocular surgery. When not practicing ophthalmology his interests are golf, bicycling, and travel.


Dr. Marlar is a 1990 graduate of Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Cornell University and a residency in veterinary and comparative ophthalmology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, after which she became board-certified. Dr. Marlar practiced in a busy specialty referral clinic in Dallas for seven years before taking a position at the Fort Worth Zoo and starting her own consulting service. Her interests include all aspects of comparative ophthalmology and vision, nutritionally related conditions, glaucoma, ophthalmic manifestations of systemic disease and dissemination of information relating to ophthalmology in zoological medicine. In addition to caring for her private practice clients and patients, she has spent time teaching, consulting and working on several field based conservation projects.


Dr. Schorling holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Louisiana State University where she also received her Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries. She completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, Mass. She then completed a combined Ophthalmology Residency and Masters of Science program at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in July, 2007. Her Masters thesis entitled Biochemical and Immunocytochemical Characterization of Canine Corneal Cells Cultured in Two Different Media involved culturing and characterizing canine corneal cells. During Dr. Schorling’s residency training, she gained extensive experience examining dogs, cats, and horses. She also completed several research projects involving ophthalmic examinations in owls, small ruminants, and tortoises. She enjoys examining all species, including exotic pets.

Dr. Schorling enjoys outdoor activities including running, hiking, and swimming. As a new resident to San Diego, she looks forward to learning to surf as well as gaining more experience in rock climbing and scuba diving.
